Sherlock Holmes

Adventures of Sherlock Holmes

TV show

Description

London, late-1800s. Sherlock Holmes is a consulting detective, using his powers of observation and deduction and vast knowledge on anything relevant to solve mysteries, including crimes. Cases that would stump most other detectives are short work for him. He is ably assisted by his friend Dr Watson.

In The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, they solve the mysteries of copper beeches, a Greek interpreter, the Norwood builder, a resident patient, the red-headed league, and one final problem.

Personal Thoughts

I won't mince words on this one: I attribute my love of mysteries to Jeremy Brett's portrayal of Sherlock Holmes. As a kid in pre-cable (and definitely pre-streaming) era, I couldn't get enough of the iconic detective on PBS (and replaying our Betamax recordings).

Many modern retellings, which draw inspiration for new stories or even remix multiple selections from Conan Doyle's originals. But the Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, and the many other editions released over about a decade, are straight-up, true to the source material, done well.

They can be tricky to find, but thanks to niche streaming services like BritBox, available both standalone and via Amazon Prime, Sherlock Holmes is available whenever you need your "genius detective" fix.
