Affiliate links

Tabletop Detective uses affiliate links from marketplaces like FlexOffers. So if we’ve suggested something you can’t wait to try, and you use our “where to buy” button, we receive a small commission. It doesn’t cost you any extra: sitesgive us a tiny cut of their profit. We use those proceeds to host and run the site, which lets us keep finding (and creating) amazing mystery resources for your next mystery night.

Positivity first

I believe that online content should embrace the ideal of “if you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all”. In that spirit, Tabletop Detective will only provide “personal thoughts” on Mysteries that I have personally seen or played and enjoyed.

It doesn’t mean that I disliked resources that don’t have “personal thoughts”–it’s just taking me time to get through them all to make notes. But if something didn’t strike a chord with me, and I still choose to include it because it’s highly rated or highly recommended by others, I’ll simply refrain from commenting and let you make up your own mind.

Check politics at the door…mostly

Solving mysteries means setting aside preconceived notions and personal biases to see the facts of the case for what they truly are. In that spirit, Tabletop Detective adopts an underlying policy of inclusion and tolerance, which I acknowledge is inherently a political viewpoint.

Beyond that, however, I am not using this site to pass judgement on the creators of entertainment. Resources on this site include older movies, books, television shows, games, and more, and makers of that entertainment all have, or had, personal viewpoints. How well those viewpoints reflect the current social climate has always varied, and continues to evolve over time.

But entertainment has value as its own reward. A momentary respite from the mundane. A challenging perspective from the past that makes us think. A puzzle that stretches our brain and challenges our problem-solving skills.

If the general zeitgeist heralds a piece of mystery entertainment, I will list it and allow you to make your own decisions about its quality. I’m not filtering my selections through the lens of judgment on mysteries or the views of their creators. And I make no apologies for that.
